inductive bible study

so i’m currently at a place called Kanakuk instatute and this is a blog about what i learned. you the reader get to enjoy the fruits of my hard labors by reading about them so here you go!

Inductive bible study is the process of going through every available resource to study the bible making sure to look at it in the correct context so that it may be correctly interpreted.  Good way to go through everything is to ask who, what when where, why, how.  Each question, once answered, will give us context. This type of study hasn’t affected my walk at all because I haven’t done it for more than 3 chapters.

Let’s practice on a verse. Luke 17: 6 He replied, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you. first it is important to take this verse in context so to read what happens before and after, to give a quick summery Jesus says forgive someone if they repent regardless of the amount. The disciples respond with give us more faith. Then Jesus responds with verse 6. After verse 6 he give an example saying who will praise you for simply doing what your supposed to, to forgive is your job. Now that we have the context surrounding the verse we can look at the verse itself.  Who: This is Jesus addressing the disciples. What: the verse itself seems to be about faith, however the surrounding context indicates that it is about forgiveness. Mainly that instead of asking for more faith you should simply forgive your brother. When & where: this is just before he heads to Jerusalem. Verse 11 indicates that he was passing between Samaria and Galilee.  Why: Jesus is rebuking his disciples in verse 4 he says and if he sins against you 7 times a day and returns 7 times saying I repent, forgive him, His disciples respond with “Increase our faith” Instead of yes lord we will do it. How: Jesus is rebuking his disciples through word pictures, he continues his rebuke in verses 7-10.

This verse is mainly taken out of context and quoted to say if you have faith your can do anything.  With a little bit of context, it is revealed to mean that forgiveness is not a matter of faith but a matter of completing to task given you.  It is important to inductively study to bible so that you would correctly handle the word of truth not give it a message its not saying.
